Nov 19 (Reuters) - Total is selling a 20 percent stake in a Nigerian offshore oil field to China's Sinopec in a $2.5 billion deal which will help the French oil group fund its ambitious exploration plans.

Total said on Monday it had signed a deal to sell the stake in the OML 138 block, which currently produces 130,000 barrels per day of oil equivalent and contains the Usan field, which started production in February.

The French group said in September it planned to sell assets worth between $15 billion and $20 billion in the period up to 2014 as part of a bolder approach to managing its business, which has seen it buy and sell assets more frequently.

PDP chieftain asks Fashola to soft-pedal on traffic law

A chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos state, Dr. Segun Ogundimu had asked Governor Raji Fashola to soft-pedal on the new Lagos traffic especially as it affects the operation of commercial motorcyclists popularly known as "okada

Ogundimu made this known while addressing journalists at the state PDP secretariat in Lagos today.

Ogundimu who was a former commissioner for transportation in Lagos state noted that the restriction of movement on Okada has worsened the transportation means in the state as people are now confronted with more challenges on daily basis than they can cope with. He added that the alternatives people are left with are quite harsher.

Poll reveals increased harassment against women over toilet use

A recent poll conducted by WaterAid Nigeria in five slums in Lagos has revealed that 40 per cent of women in these slums have no toilets and are forced to defecate in the open.
Dr. Michael Ojo, the organisation’s Country Representative, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja, while commenting on the World Toilet Day.
He said the poll was conducted in Ajegunle, Ijora, Badia, Oko Agbon and Otto-Oyingbo from Oct. 18 to Oct.22 by “GlobeScan’’, an international polling and research company, commissioned by WaterAid.

Nicki Minaj has signed London based Nigerian artist Parker Ighile to her new record label. The Super Bass singer says she is however yet to come up with a name for it as she is looking for one that will suit male artists as well.
Its now becoming common place for American rappers to sign African artists to their record label. Kanye West opened the gates by signing D banj and Don Jazzy to Good Music music, followed by Akon’s Konvict Music who signed Nigeria’s P Square and Kenya’s 14 year old Wilson. Akon who was recently in Kenya for a concert is yet to make public names of artists he signed during his visit.
Nicki has been signed to Young Money, lil Wayne’s record label. It has been a precedent for American rappers to establish their own record labels when they hit the pinnacle of their careers. Lil Wayne was himself signed to Birdman’s CMB Cash Money Brothers before opening his own. This could however be a make or break decision for Nicki especially if she leaves her current record label as the stable is often very instrumental to an artist’s success and such can be said of Young Money and Nicki Minaj.

The contract between the Federal Government and a Canadian firm, Manitoba, for the management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria may go awry following the stripping of Manitoba of powers to control human resource and finance at the company.

Investigation by our correspondent showed that the Canadian firm, which in July sealed a N3.72bn deal to manage TCN, one of the successor companies carved out of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, had lost its powers to manage the organisation at the insistence of PHCN workers.

With this development, the PHCN workers are to control both the human and financial resources at the company, while Manitoba employees seconded to Nigeria will be responsible for the technical expansion of the nation’s power grid.

While 17 other PHCN successor companies were slated for either privatisation or concession in the ongoing power sector reform programme of President Goodluck Jonathan, the Federal Government retained 100 per cent ownership in TCN.

Sambo’s helicopter destroys 78-year-old woman’s home

The sand stirred up by the helicopter conveying Vice-President Namadi Sambo to Buanchor, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State on Friday destroyed a mud-house belonging to a 78-year- old woman, Mrs. Bessie Obi, when it landed in the community.

Sambo was in the community to ascertain the extent of damage caused by recent landslide from surrounding mountains silting rivers, streams and causing flooding in the area.

As soon as the mud-house collapsed, Obi ran out and started crying profusely.

Obi was quickly attended to by officers of the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency and its counterpart in the National Emergency Management Agency.

The Police have earmarked N425,250,000 for the purchase of arms and ammunition in the 2013 budget.

They also plan to invest N296,708,180 on riot equipment and another N455,260,195 on  protective accessories like bulletproof vests, and ballistic helmets, among others.

An appraisal of their budget indicates that N1,365,887,755 would be spent on uniforms and other clothing materials including the newly inaugurated operational uniform.

Aggrieved riders of motorcycles popularly called Okada plying Magodo area of Lagos State took to the Ojodu Berger road on Monday to engage some officers of the Lagos State Traffic and Management Authority in a fight after a raid by a combined team of policemen and LASTMA officers.

Our correspondent gathered that an Okada rider, said to be plying one of the restricted routes, was chased by the patrol teams.

True story: I cannot sit here next to this black man

A 50- something year old white woman arrived at her seat on a crowded flight and immediately didn't want the seat. The seat was next to a black man. Disgusted, the woman immediately summoned the flight attendant and demanded a new seat. The
woman said "I cannot sit here next to this black man." The fight attendant said "Let me see if I can find another seat." After checking, the flight attendant returned and stated "Ma'am, there are no more seats in economy, but I will check with the captain and see if there is something in first class." About 10 minutes went by and the flight attendant returned and stated "The captain has confirmed that there are no more seats in economy, but there is one in first class. It is our company policy to never move a person from economy to first class, but being that it would be some sort of scandal to force a person to sit next to an UNPLEASANT person, the captain agreed to make the switch to first class." Before the woman could say anything, the attendant gestured to the black man and said, "Therefore sir, if you would so kindly retrieve your personal items, we would like to move you to the comfort of first class as the captain doesn't want you to sit next to an unpleasant person." Passengers in the seats nearby began to applause while some gave a standing ovation.

Cat has been Mayor of Alaska town for 15 years

There is a town in Alaska that has had a cat as mayor for 15 years. The cat named Stubbs has been the mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska for nearly all of his life -- no joke.
It's been that way for more than a decade in the small tourist town that boasts nearly 900 residents.
The part-manx was named honorary mayor shortly after his birth, and now locals all know the cat as "Mayor Stubbs."

15TH Century Bras found in Austria

Four mediaeval bras have been found in a collection of textiles excavated from an Austrian castle, confounding conventional wisdom that bras did not exist before the 19th century.

The linen garments were found in the remains of Lengberg Castle in eastern Tyrol. They resemble modern bras in that they have two distinct cups, and have decorative needle lace that would not have been visible when worn under a dress.
The bras were among 2,700 textile fragments found during archaeological investigations of the castle by a team from the University of Innsbruck, which began in 2008.

First Lady Patience Jonathan is the convener of the event, with the theme “The African Woman: A Voice for Peace,” which is expected to be attended by spouses of African leaders.
Accordin to sources, the cars comprise 80 units of BMW X3 and X5 series with a market value of N13.5 million each, while the remaining 120 are exotic models of Honda, Jaguar and others.
“Daily Post” gathered that the vehicles were supplied by Coscharis Motors, and 180 units have already been delivered to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Saturday.
The cars are for use during the 7th African First Ladies for Peace Mission (AFLPM) summit scheduled for 24 to 27 July in Abuja. Already, African first ladies have begun arriving in the country since weekend for the four-day event.
There was conflicting information by last night on whether the cars were bought outright or hired, and no government official was ready to speak with our correspondents on the record for this story.
When contacted, the spokesman for Coscharis Motors, Mr. Ifeanyi Nihe, by telephone on Monday, he said the company had supplied vehicles to the Federal Government but refused to state the number and cost.
“I am not in the position to give out the real value of the transaction,” he said.
When asked which government agency was handling the transaction, Nihe said, “Our company is still talking with some officials of the government. I don’t know whether it is the First Lady’s office or not.”
Nihe also refused to confirm whether the cars were sold or leased out to the government for the event.
Coscharis Motors is the same company that supplied over 3,000 units of BMW series used during the 8th All African Games also known as COJA in 2003.
A source said the transaction for the 200 cars was processed by the office of the Minister of State for Finance.

Man uses N50 bread as bait to behead neighbour’s 7-year-old son for rituals

A man arrested by the officials of the Department of State Services (DSS), Joan Yakubu has confessed that he used N50 bread to lure the seven year-old son of his neighbour whom he beheaded.
Yakubu said this after he was arrested by the DSS officials attached to the FCT command at AYA Asokoro alongside his accomplice Ishaya Dukulung, 30.
He said his friend asked him to get a fresh human head to be sold to a client in Abuja who promised him huge amount of money.
According to him “I cut off the head of Danjuma after I persuaded him by asking if he would like to eat bread and he answered yes! So I bought bread for N50 and gave him and while he was eating, I asked him to go with me to a nearby river for a swim which did.
“When we got to the river, I entered the river while he stayed away. I told him to join me while I pretended to be washing my feet. I forced the boy to drown before I cut off the head and left the main body in the river.”
Yakubu said he later concealed the head in a bag and took it to Dakulung before heading to Abuja to meet the buyer.
The Assistant Director Operations, Ibrahim Halilu said the suspects were “arrested at the AYA Junction on July 22 at about 01:30 with fresh human head of boy of about seven years old who was later identified as Samu Danjuma from Anguwan Galadima in Nasarawa Local Government, Nasarawa state. They were arrested while they were looking for a buyer after a tip-off.”

EDDIE MURPHY 'DIES' AGAIN

Actor and comedian Eddie Murphy is again the victim of social media murder after a website, Global Associated News, set Twitter ablaze with reports of his death.
“Actor Eddie Murphy is reported to have died shortly after a snowboard accident earlier today - July 24, 2012,” read the article.

The site went on to explain that the Dr. Dolittle star had gone on holiday with family and friends in Zermatt ski resort, Switzerland when the “incident” happened.
“Witnesses indicate that Eddie Murphy lost control of his snowboard and struck a tree at a high rate of speed. Eddie Murphy was air lifted by ski patrol teams to a local hospital, however, it is believed that the actor died instantly from the impact of the crash”
Failing to notice the fine print disclaimer at the bottom of the page, social media users conveyed the death hoax causing a barrage of condolence tweets before the truth was finally unveiled.
Speaking to E News, Murphy’s representative confirmed that the rumor was indeed a hoax.
"Trust me, Eddie is very much alive and well…and definitely not in Switzerland snowboarding.”
Ironically, this is not the first time Eddie Murphy has been rumored dead. The same website published a similar story in February this year saying the actor met his demise in another snow boarding accident.
Murphy joins the list of celebrities who have experienced death hoaxes such as Charlie Sheen, Adam Sandler, Will Smith,  Paris Hilton and Tiger Woods.

248 human fetuses found in Russian forest

Villagers in Russia's south Urals have stumbled upon a gruesome discovery — four barrels containing 248 human fetuses left in a forest.
Police in the Sverdlovsk region said Tuesday the fetuses, preserved in formaldehyde, were kept in barrels with tags containing surnames and numbers.
Police suspects that one of the four local hospitals is responsible for dumping the barrels.
The fetuses were found a few miles away from a highway linking the region's capital, Yekaterinburg, with another big city, Nizhny Tagil.

A few weeks after releasing their compilation album, ‘Empire Mates State of Mind’ EME acts Banky W, Wizkid, and Skales have kicked off their first ever EME US tour.

The crew, along with X.O Senavoe and Rotimi kicked off the long awaited tour on Wednesday, July 4, and will end on Sunday September 2, 2012, covering nine states in North America including New York, Chicago, Texas, and Atlanta.

Wizzy, with the EME team, will also be in Toronto at the Lagondola Banquet Hall on July 20th, and in Vancouver, at The Hungarian Hall on July 21st.

Diapers to Dom? No prob for Jay-Z!

The rapper made his first post-Blue Ivy appearance tonight at the grand reopening of his 40/40 club in New York City.

While Jay passed on the press line, we did get a chance to tell him congratulations on his and Beyoncé's latest and greatest coproduction.

"Thank you," he answered with that new dad grin.

Beyoncé didn't make it out (we'll have to wait to see her undoubtedly amazing post-baby bod!) and presumably stayed home with baby Blue.

But does she need to worry about her hubby's behavior in the club when she's not there?

Not one bit! While Jay was definitely in good company (Ashanti, Spike Lee, Questlove, Warren Buffett, members of the New York Yankees and more stars came out for 40/40's big night), he mostly enjoyed the company of male friends in private areas of the crowded club.

At one point, a beaming Jay showed a pal some pictures on his phone. He grinned ear to ear as he scrolled through the pics.

Our guess is that this proud papa was thinking of Blue Ivy on his big night on the town!
