Louis Van Gaal has changed Man Utd's outlook on football claims Wayne Rooney

 

United made it five wins out of five under new boss Van Gaal by lifting the Guinness International Champions Cup here with a 3-1 win over bitter rivals Liverpool in a thrilling game in front of 51,000 fans in the Sun Life Stadium that was a great advert for the Premier League.

United have scored 16 goals and conceded only four - three of them penalties - and Rooney says Van Gaal's decision to play a 3-4-1-2 system is perfect for the players he has inherited at Old Trafford.

"It's been a good few weeks," said Rooney before United flew home to Manchester from their US tour with a trophy. "We've got a new manager who wants us to play a different style of football. We've had to adapt. We've had some good results against top opposition so we can be pleased.

"I think the system suits the team, not only myself. The manager came in and had a look at the players we've got. He's done what he thinks is best suited for our team.

"He's a tough manager but he's been great since he came in. He's given us all a different way of looking at football, which we haven't had before. It's been great for us and hopefully that will continue."

United had to come from behind after Steve Gerrard had given Liverpool the lead with a first half lead. And Brendan Rodgers' team could have been home and dry had they taken some good chances.

But United stormed back with two goals in two minutes from Rooney - his fifth of the tour - and Juan Mata before sub Jesse Lingaard added their third near the end.

Rooney, who won th eplayer of the tournament trophy, says beating the likes of Liverpool, who were last season's Premier League runners-up, Real Madrid, the Champions Cup winners, Roma, who were second in Serie A, and Inter Milan, has given them a good platform for the new season which kicks off on August 16.

He added: "We wanted to win play well and win games on the tour and obviously we've done that. We've won a trophy as well. It's always nice to beat Liverpool. We're happy with the work we've done out here, now we go on to Valencia our final warm-up game next week and then the season starts."
